Design Command were appointed to refurbish David’s Café, a much loved independent café, bookshop and gift store at the heart of Letchworth Garden City. The brief was to create a warm, inviting space where customers could relax with a coffee, browse books and gifts, and enjoy the slower pace that defines the café’s character.

Inspired by classic mid‑century interiors, the design layers warm textures, soft upholstery and subtle pops of colour to create a comfortable, residential feel. Seating is integrated seamlessly with retail displays, allowing the café and shop to work together effortlessly while maintaining a clear and welcoming flow.

Soft, layered lighting enhances the calm atmosphere, highlighting key materials and creating gentle transitions between browsing and dining areas. The result is a thoughtfully refreshed space - a place designed for spending time, connecting with the community and celebrating the unique blend of books, music and great coffee that has defined David’s Café for over 60 years.
